Years ago, I had what I still think is a brilliant idea, which I called the NOTA Movement.

It probably was thought of before, and many, many times, at that.

But it was original with me - that is, even if I didn’t think of it FIRST, I did think of it without having it suggested…

Here’s the basic idea:

On ANY ballot, each item up for a vote - whether it’s an elective position, or a proposition - will have at least one “extra” voting choice added to it, and that choice is NOTA - None Of The Above.

It doesn’t matter WHAT the position or proposition is… and if NOTA “wins” then ALL OTHER CHOICES are REJECTED!

Let’s concentrate on the position vote - the proposition vote is a lot more complex, and we’ll get to it later - but the position vote, oh, that’s SIMPLE!

“Rejected” means rejected. Let’s suppose we’re looking at a race, for, oh, let’s say… Mayor.

Now, let’s suppose there are three people running for the office: Smith, Perez, and Jackson. The ballot will have four choices:
[ ] Smith
[ ] Perez
[ ] Jackson
[ ] NOTA - None Of The Above

So, the election is over… and NOTA wins! Now what?

Well, as I see it, there are two possibilities: (1) We have another election - and NONE of the rejected candidates is eligible to run again! That’s right, they’ve been REfrickenJECTED! The Demicans, the Republicrats, and the Indepundits can all fricken well pick a new person to run, ’cause these are NOTA’ed.
– or –
(2) The office is either abolished or simply remains vacant until the next “regular” election.

I love this… but the first time - as I said, years ago - that I talked it up to various people, our discussions led to a fantastic refinement (wait for it, you’re gonna LOVE this one):

To not vote, is to vote for NOTA!

So, look at it! Think of the times you’ve looked at an election, and said to yourself, “What a crock! I’m not going to vote for that senile liar the Republicrats have, or that sharp-dressed smooth-talking con man the Demicans put up… and I’m sure as hell not voting for any of those other clowns… what’s the point? I’m just gonna stay home on Election Day.”

In fact, most people DO stay home… and that’s GOOD! We’re damn near guaranteed that NOTA is going to win pretty much every position… unless and until we get someone worth voting for, in every single position.

So … if you agree with this, please comment… please email me and let me know you’re on board… let’s get this boat sailing! We’re going to start putting together material so you - that’s right YOU (who else did you think was gonna do this?) - can begin bringing this GREAT IDEA to the attention of everyone you know and everyone you meet!

STAY FRICKEN TUNED!!!
